Hi folks,
Nick and I recorded this the morning after the elections. We talked about two things:
International resonance: it’s very clear by now that we live in an age in which right-wing politics has gone through a transformation, but the liberal “left” as it still called, remains stuck in the past. We’re obviously most familiar with Turkey and the United States, so those are the examples we developed here.
Turkey-US relations: the personal relationship between Trump and Erdoğan works pretty well to overcome some problems, but Nick and I thought that the risk of a long-term divergence was higher under Trump.
You’ll also note some technical improvements. We finally have intro and outro music! (It’s surprisingly hard to find a bit of Anatolian Rock that works for this sort of thing.) Hopefully the sound quality should also be a bit better.
It’s not cheap recording these, so pretty soon we’re going to erect a paywall midway through the episodes. You’re all paid subscribers anyways, right? If not, you can sign up below. That’ll get you access to the weekly “Notebook” newsletter too.
As always, let us know what you think!
For those of you who missed it, I wrote a piece comparing Trump and Erdoğan this week. There’ll be more in that vein in the next few days and weeks. Stay tuned.
Best,
Selim
